APPocket listings -- where homes aren't marketed publicly on the MLS -- are fairly common in high-end real estate. This tactic was used with Madonna's L.A. home; Simon Cowell's house is currently being floated as a $20 million pocket listing; and in January, Barry Bonds' Beverly Park house hit the market this way as well. Almost a year later, Bonds' home is officially on the MLS and with a price cut.
First offered at $25 million, the house at 44 Beverly Park Circle is now down to $23.5 million. Although Bonds spent the bulk of his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, he preferred a L.A. home base, buying the enormous estate in 2002 for $8.7 million, according to property records.
Like Bonds, the home has a presence, sprawling more than 17,000 square feet on a 1.85-acre lot. A circular motor court leads to the Italian-style home's entrance. An ornate entryway opens with 30-foot ceilings and hand-painted Trompe L'oeil murals. Venetian plaster walls and imported limestone and Italian Travertine flooring continue into the main living areas.
Among the home's features: a 12-person theater, "commercial-grade" gym and a full spa, which includes "steam sauna and tanning salon ... a hydrotherapy tub and Swedish full-body therapy rooms."
Outside there isn't a baseball diamond, but a 2,100-square-foot sports court, pool and loggia with outdoor kitchen. A two-story guesthouse rounds out the rest of the grounds.
A star baseball player from the moment he began playing, Bonds broke several records during his time with the Giants. However, allegations of drug use and a recent denial to the Baseball Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility have marred the slugger's reputation.
The listing is held by Mauricio Umansky of The Agency.
Wondering what it would take to pay for Bonds' colossal casa? Using the Zillow mortgage calculator, the monthly payment is estimated to be $93,345, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year fixed mortgage.

It's a classic case of starting a family and needing a bigger house. But Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley's tri-level condo is anything but ordinary. "It's so unique to have a tri-level penthouse. There's nothing like that here," said listing agent Melanie Stecura of Kurfiss Sotheby's International Realty. In fact, when Utley and wife Jennifer bought the home, there wasn't anything like it in the urban Philadelphia neighborhood.
"They bought a bi-level penthouse and the apartment beneath it and combined the two," Stecura explained. Now listed for $4.3 million, 210 W. Washington Square #PHSW, Philadelphi 19106 is a rare piece of real estate to hit the Center City East market. A stunning art deco construction, the Ayer building dates back to 1929, when it was built for N.W. Ayer & Sons -- the ad agency best known for De Beers' "A diamond is forever" and the Army's "Be all you can be" slogans. (The building's lobby is pictured above.)
In 2006, the award-winning Wesley Wei Architects reconceived the building, turning it into a condominium. The Utleys snatched up their units in 2008, hiring architect Michael Ryan and interior designer Gregory Augustine to create a sleek, custom home spanning three floors. (See the slideshow below.) A private elevator leads to a master suite with a wall of glass overlooking the main living room. A media room and wet bar round out the lowest entertainment level, showing off custom design elements and a contemporary palette of grays and blues.
"When they bought the home, they were a younger couple, so it was a great place for them starting out," Stecura said. "But now that they have a family, they wanted more land and a yard to play in."
The family of three has already moved to a new home, according to Stecura, but they're staying in the Philadelphia area. This isn't a surprise considering the five-time MLB All-Star and World Series champion just extended his contract for two more years with the Phillies.
Interested in buying Utley's home or one like it? CenterCityTeam real estate agent Frank L. DeFazio says now is a good time to buy in the luxury Philadelphia market. "For buyers looking between $1.5 million and $4 million, there are many choices, and the buyers once again are in the driver's seat," he said.
Using Zillow's mortgage calculator, Utley's home is estimated to cost $16,267 a month, assuming 20 percent down on a 30-year fixed mortgage.

In Los Angeles, real estate often stays in the celebrity family. If one celeb lives in a home, chances are another will follow suit. Such seems the case with an English-style home at 1385 Miller Place in the Hollywood Hills that's listed for sale at $2.495 million. The charming house reputedly has been rented by a number of stars over the years, starting with The Beatles.
"It was a rental house for a long time," current owner Mike Clifford said. "When The Beatles played the Hollywood Bowl at the height of their fame, they stayed in the house. David Hockney lived in the home for a couple of years and gave my neighbor a painting." Musician Meat Loaf and author Casey Johnson, daughter of Johnson & Johnson's co-founder, also reportedly leased the home. (View the interior in the slideshow below.)
The former owner was a Hollywood socialite, and through her, stars discovered the 1939-built home for themselves. Of course, most of the home's rental history is hearsay -- stories passed from owner to owner and neighbor to neighbor -- as rental agreements and lease records aren't kept by the county. The Beatles reportedly stayed in the mid-1960s, followed by artist Hockney in the 1980s.
"Hockney was best friends with my neighbor, who told me that he [Hockney] physically painted the bottom of my pool, and then it was subsequently covered over by the owner at the time," Clifford said. Clifford bought the 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath home in 2004, saying he loved the light-filled spaces and architecture, unusual for an area dominated by Spanish-style homes. He lived in the home for a year and a half before he, too, rented it out.
Now that the market is better and he's spending most of his time in New York, Clifford said that he has decided to sell the home, but he admits that he's sad to let it go. "It's a special place." Listing agent Richard Klug of Sotheby's International Realty said an offer has been accepted for the home, but until the deal goes through, it will remain on the Hollywood Hills real estate market.

It's the ultimate Tommy Hilfiger accessory: Tommy's own penthouse atop New York's Plaza Hotel. Tommy Hilfiger, the 62-year-old fashion tycoon, is listing his duplex at the Plaza Hotel for $80 million, making it one of the most exclusive condo listings in Manhattan. The apartment stretches over 6,000 square feet and includes the iconic dome atop the plaza, along with sweeping terraces overlooking Central Park and Fifth Avenue.
If it sells at the asking price, the property (see the video below for a glimpse inside) would be second-most expensive condo ever to close in New York, according to Jonathan Miller of Miller Samuel. The most expensive condo to close is believed to be a penthouse at 15 Central Park West sold by former Citigroup CEO Sandy Weill in 2012.
In an interview, Hilfiger -- the founder and principal designer of Tommy Hilfiger -- called the property a "castle in the sky." He purchased the property-two units that he combined into one -- in 2008 for $25 million. He and his wife, Dee, spent more than $17 million on a renovation that took more than three years. He said he wanted to design the apartment in keeping with the Plaza's rich history. "I wanted to bring back the original vision of The Plaza," he said, "to what it was during Truman Capote's Black and White Ball ... that old-world charm, with the original detail and glamour."
The apartment has four bedrooms, five baths and a grand staircase bathed in red carpet. One of the apartment's most glamorous features is its iconic dome, which is one of the Plaza's most famous features. Underneath the dome, Hilfiger built his own "Eloise Room," named for the famed children's-book character who famously wreaked havoc at the Plaza. The room is painted with murals by Hilary Knight, who illustrated the original "Eloise" books.
Hilfiger said he is selling because he is spending more time in Greenwich, Conn., where he is completing a three-year renovation of a 22-acre estate. The estate is built on the highest point in Greenwich, he said, and overlooks Long Island Sound and New York City. He said Greenwich has become his "main residence" and that his younger children are now attending school there.
He added, however, that it's a good time to sell in New York.
"I think it may be the strongest market in the world right now," he said. "Everyone in the world, whether they're from Qatar or China, wants a luxury apartment in New York."
Hilfiger's apartment is also filled with iconic art -- including several important paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. But Hilfiger said the art is not for sale. He said much of the furniture and furnishings-including pieces once owned by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor-could be included in the sale under the right terms.
While other developers are building giant glass condo towers nearby, with higher views and more modern styles, Hilfiger said they will never build another apartment like his. "They're never going to build a building in front of this view of Central Park," he said. "Or the view of Fifth Avenue. And they will never build another Plaza."
He said that when it comes to purchasing real estate, he has always operated under the same principal: "You start with location, location, location. And when you couple that with fabulous properties, you have it all."
Hilfiger is listing his property with I. Dolly Lenz, the New York megabroker who recently founded her own real estate firm, Dolly Lenz Real Estate.
